original designs by Terry Hanover

Master Woodworker Terry Hanover

Terry Hanover has been designing and creating custom furniture and cabinetry for more than thirty years. His is a true labor of love, and his reverence for wood is evident in every piece he creates.

"Wood has a warmth and beauty that can't be equaled by any other medium," Terry says.  "My job is simply to enhance the natural beauty that wood already possesses."

While Terry frequently works with designers and architects, he especially values working with the people who will share their homes with his pieces.

"The final product will be a joining of my knowledge and expertise with the client's needs and tastes. And the client will be able to use that piece knowing it has been made to last a lifetime and beyond."

Most of the pieces created by master woodworker Terry Hanover are one-of-a-kind, made to order.  Now and then, however, Terry makes a piece that he loves so much, he agrees to repeat the design. Such is the case with these seven designs. Even so, an individual's choice of wood, stain, or tile, and Terry's rendition of the handcarved details, make each piece a unique creation.

The Skara Brae
At only 65 inches high, this cabinet is not as tall as most hutches, so we named it after the Orkney Island archeological site that consists of 5,000-year-old houses that were occupied by very short people.

Cherry cabinet with leaded glass windows,
lighted interior, handmade Motawi tiles
(from Ann Arbor, Michigan) and cutout
features on the arched skirt.  $5,280.00.

The Glasgow Rose
When Terry Hanover creates a Glasgow Rose Writing Desk, it’s a hands-on affair — hand-cut dovetails, leaded glass, hand-crafted wooden drawer guides, and character wood carefully selected to showcase the natural beauty of domestic cherry. Though the desk has evolved through many versions, its name pays homage to the home city of Scottish architect, Charles Renee Mackintosh, whose work influenced its design.
As shown: 54" wide x 28" deep x 38" high, $2,900.00 Custom-made in other sizes and with hand-carved detailing.

The Randalay

The Randalay Sideboard’s mullions echo styles of the 1930s, complemented by walnut inlays and hand-painted Motawi tiles. Arches on top and bottom soften the masculine lines.
As shown in quarter-sawn white oak: 84" wide x 20" deep x 46" high, $3,900.00.  Custom-made in other sizes and domestic hardwoods.

The Acorn Series
Reminiscent of the era of grand old lodges, these masculine pieces are often mistaken for antiques, and feature a quality of craftsmanship that is uncommon today.   Each oak leaf drawer pull is handcarved, as is the acorn motif on the backboard of the chest of drawers and bedposts. Nightstands, dressers and mirrors are also available in this style.  Terry selected quarter-sawn oak as the ideal wood to complement his Acorn series, however these pieces can be custom-made in other woods and sizes.  Contact us for pricing.

Bamboo Furniture

Bamboo is an exciting furniture medium for a number of reasons.

Bamboo is both beautiful and strong. Don't be fooled by its delicate, subtle grain. Bamboo is as strong as steel. And it doesn't shrink and swell with changes in humidity, as wood does.

Bamboo is eco-friendly. It grows quickly - six years to harvest, compared to 60 years for a hardwood tree. It thrives while stabilizing soil on steep, rocky slopes without the addition of pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. When cut, bamboo does not need to be replanted; new culms grow directly from the existing root system. And it produces 35% more oxygen than a similar sized stand of trees.

Not all bamboos are created equal. Bamboo panels are made by laminating strips of bamboo together. Many bamboo laminates are made with toxic glues. Ours isn't. We use Plyboo™, which is LEED certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
